Chitosan from dried shrimp shells & head

Chitosan from dried shrimp shells & head

Chitosan is a derivative of chitin. Chitosan is made by treating(deacetylating) the chitin shells of shrimp and other crustaceans with an alkaline substance – concentrated sodium hydroxide.

Scientists need to work out sustainable ways to use and refine crustacean shells, while government and industry should invest in utilising this abundant and cheap renewable resource.
